*** The State of Colorado mandates Contractor licenses for Electricians, Plumbers, Landscape Architects and Architects/Engineers and you can confirm active status here on the Colorado DORA website.  Individual cities have other unique licensing requirements for General Contractors (and subtrades) so check with your city hall when planning your project (eg Boulder Contractor Licensing, Denver Planning and Development).

*** British Columbia (BC, Canada) the Homeowners Protection Office HPO was implemented (after a wave of leaky condo’s cost homeowners millions in restoration assessments) to ensure that all General Contractors and Builders are licensed to build homes in BC.  There may be local requirements for sub-trades like floorig and tiles, and check to ensure they have proper business license and insurance to work in your city.  Vancouver also has a new Metro West Inter-Municipal License pilot program (running through 2015) that allows contractors to register and work across most of the lower mainland
